    WHAT IS A CIF?

The “congé individuel de formation” (CIF) or individual training leave is a leave of absence enabling you to follow a training course on your own initiative. These training actions are separate from your participation in courses that are part of the training plan implemented by your company. They are carried out in full or partially during the work time.

    ARE YOU CONCERNED?

To apply for training leave, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Have been in salaried employment for 24 months (consecutive or not) regardless of the type of successive work contracts, with 12 months spent in the company.
  • Comply with a so called “grace period” since the completion of the last internship in the context of individual training leave (CIF).
  • Your employer cannot, except in special cases, refuse your request for leave if all the above defined conditions are met.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO?

In order to benefit for individual training leave, you must:

  • Send your employer a written request to obtain leave of absence; this must clearly indicate the start date of the training course, its full title, length and the name of the training organisation running this course. This request must be presented to your employer within a defined period
  • Send the appropriate CIF accredited organisation a request to meet, in full or partially, your salary and, where appropriate, the costs of your training during the course. Each accredited individual training leave organisation (OPACIF) has a form for requesting salary cover and training costs that must be completed by you and also the training organisation concerned and your employer.
  • To find out which organisation you should contact, you should contact the personnel department or the personnel representative institutions (works committee, personnel delegate). You can also consult the Useful addresses section on the Centre INFFO site.

WHAT ARE YOUR RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS?

During your individual training leave, your employment contract is not terminated, but is suspended and you must prove your presence during the training. After the training, you will resume your employment position. Your salary is paid by your employer throughout your period of leave.
